Preparing Kids Items for Consignment Sale

Last year I took some winter items of my kids that were too small for them to a consignment sale. I made about $75. But it was my first time doing that and it was lots of work to get everything together and also to figure out "how" to put it together the right way. On the consignment sale site there is all the information you need but no pictures on how to prepare the clothing for the sale. So for all of you that are trying to bring stuff to consignment sales for the first time here is how to get everything ready. First of all select the clothes that you want to bring to the sale. Since we are in spring this time they are taking only spring/summer clothing.

Wash everything and iron so they look nice to the costumer. (I still haven't ironed mine!)

Now that you have all your clothes you have to enter each item in the consignment site. In my case I had 2 lines to enter the item description. I usually put a short description on the first line (jeans or pink and white dress) and on the bottom one, the brand, or the color or how many pieces.

Than you enter the price which should be 1/4 to 1/3 of the retail price, but it's up to you. You set the price of your items! And receive 65% of the sale price.

At the end they ask you if you want to discount the item. Usually on the last 2 days of the event they have a sale where all the items that are checked as "discountable" are going to be 1/2 price.

And you also have to say if at the end of the event you want them to give all unsold item to donation. Last year I checked some items for donating and some no. This year I'm getting everything back and I'm going to give them to Goodwill myself.

When you have your inventory ready you have to print your tags. You will need white cardstock to do that. It will print 6 price tags in 1 sheet.

At this point you will need: a hole punch, safety pins, tape, zip ties, zip locks, child size plastic hangers (find them at $1 store or Target or even better when you go shopping ask the cashier if they can give you some extra ones!)

If you have pants hangers with clips great
if not use a regular one and use safety pins, like this:
and if the pant/skirt is part of a 2 piece item just use the same hanger for both

When you have a 4 or 5 or more pieces for one listing you can use zip locks for smaller items (socks, booties, bibs) and use a few hangers that you will secure together with a zip tie to keep together a blanket use safety pins on both sides I also had a bedding set, lucky for me I kept the original bag

When I pin the price tag I also put a piece of tape on top of it

It is a bit time consuming all the process, hopefully I'm going to make some $$ (at least the $10 I had to pay to register!!)

  2. All of your attention to detail is sure to pay off when others look at your items at the sale. They all look brand new to me! I hope that you make some money. I'm sure that it really adds up to continuously have to buy clothes for a growing child.
